8 Important Social Media Statistics

If your company doesn’t have a social strategy yet, there’s no time like the present. The digital age isn’t slowing down anytime soon, which means social media will continue to be an essential role in any company’s marketing plan. Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been utilizing social media already, consider these eight important social media statistics recently highlighted by Business 2 Community.

The Fastest Growing Demographic on Twitter

Twitter continues to be a consistently performing social media platform. What you might not expect, though, is that its number one fastest growing demographic is the 55 to 64 year-old group. It’s up 79% since 2012. So, if you’re looking to engage that age group, don’t make the mistake of thinking Twitter is a young man’s game.

Facebook is Mobile Heavy

Just about everyone has a mobile device these days. Just about everyone has Facebook, too. So, it’s no surprise that many people visit Facebook through their mobile devices. What might surprise you, however, is that 189 million Facebook users only visit the site through their smartphone or tablet. As mobile use accounts for 30% of Facebook’s revenue, you’ll want to consider this when designing ads.

YouTube Often Outdoes Cable

If you’re marketing to 18 to 34 year olds in the US, cable might not be your best bet. YouTube outcompetes them for this key demographic. Of course, that doesn’t mean your video will automatically reach as many viewers, but it will probably be far more cost effective.

LinkedIn is on the Rise

While LinkedIn may not be thought of as the most exciting social media platform, its numbers certainly are. Every second, LinkedIn welcomes 2 new members to its platform. Take advantage of the site’s many offerings, and start enjoying greater exposure.

That Said…

LinkedIn also has a lower percentage of active users than other popular choices like Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Pinterest. News-related items may be best for LinkedIn, while your more interactive posts go to the other options.

Social Media is King

If you think you can market effectively without social media, you’re in a very select, though dubious, group. Only 7% of marketers exclude social media from their approach.

We Love Smartphones

When surveyed, 25% of people who own smartphones reported that they couldn’t remember the last time they didn’t have theirs right next to them. This is a huge demographic that you can essentially always engage.

Blogging Isn’t Great Job Security

Everyone knows blogs can play a vital role in a marketing campaign. Having a blogger in-house also makes for a number of advantages in terms of controlling posts, releasing them in a timely fashion, etc. That said, just 9% of marketing firms hire bloggers for fulltime positions. So, those that are looking to get hired better produce the kind of content that leaves their competitors in the dust.

Social media is too important a part of our everyday lives for marketers not to take it seriously. Consider the above statistics in your approach, and make 2014 a successful year for outreach.
